Scottish Tree of the Year 2017

15th August, 2017. I was delighted once again to photograph the candidate trees for Scottish Tree of the Year – all except one on the Orkneys that the Woodland Trust wisely used a local photographer to coverĀ instead. Interestingly, the Scottish division of the Woodland Trust is the only one in the country to hire a photographer to provide coverage – and I’d like to think that’s evident on the Trust’s website showing the other candidates from England, Wales and Ireland! As usual, there was a lot of driving around the country, from Beauly in the north east to Greenock in the south west. I photographed the trees’ supportersĀ during the day with studio flash outdoors and, if shooting the trees at dusk, used light painting techniques to make them stand out.

The award ceremony will be held at the Scottish Parliament on 3rd December.
